Manchester City Women today maintained their unbeaten start to the FA Women’s Super League Spring Series after a brace from Jane Ross helped them to a comfortable 5-1 win over Yeovil Town Ladies at the Academy Stadium.
Fresh from their FA Cup victory at Wembley last Saturday, the hosts started very dominantly and after a good run Toni Duggan fired just over from the edge of the box.
The first goal of the game came shortly after when Steph Houghton played a quick free-kick down the wing to Lucy Bronze and her cross was turned into her own net by Annie Heatherson.
The lead was doubled a minute later when Duggan played a superb ball over the top of the Yeovil defence to Jill Scott who looped the ball over the Yeovil goalkeeper, Megan Walsh, as she rushed out to attempt to close her down.
Duggan could have got her name on the scoresheet when the ball fell to her in the box following a scramble, but her shot was saved well by Walsh.
The visitors managed to pull a goal back when Lucy Quinn was the first to react to an error between the City defence, and she drove towards goal before slotting the ball past Ellie Roebuck.
The two goal lead was restored when Ross grabbed her first of the afternoon, finishing well after a driven cross by Georgia Stanway.
City looked set to run riot and they would have grabbed a fourth just before the break but Walsh performed an excellent double save from Ross and then Duggan.
The second half started the same as the first with City dominating as they looked to increase their goal difference and they almost did just that, but efforts from Duggan, Scott and Jennifer Beattie were not good enough to trouble Walsh.
Ross secured a brace after the hour mark when she was in the right place at the right time to poke the ball over the line after Houghton’s header rebounded off the post.
The lead was extended to four when Kosovare Asllani smashed the ball into the back of the net after a mix-up in the box between the Yeovil players.
The deficit could have been reduced when Yeovil were awarded a penalty, however Roebuck got down well to save Sarah Wiltshire’s spot-kick.
There was further drama in the final few minutes as Carli Lloyd was sent off for an elbow.
