Manchester City Women this afternoon missed the chance to go top of the FA Women’s Super League after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal Ladies with England midfielder Jordan Nobbs scoring the only goal of the game at the Academy Stadium.
A win today would have seen City leapfrog leaders Liverpool Ladies who were comfortably beaten 7-0 by Chelsea Ladies this afternoon.
It was City who had the first major chance of the game when Steph Houghton climbed highest to meet a Megan Campbell corner but her header was flicked onto the post by Jill Scott and then the home side could not force the ball over the line following a scramble in the box.
The visitors grew into the game as the half progressed and they almost took the lead when Dominique Janssen’s free-kick was deflected onto the roof of the net however they could not trouble the City defence from the resulting corner.
Daniëlle van de Donk will feel unlucky not to have opened the scoring when she latched onto Nobbs’ through ball before rounding City goalkeeper, Marie Hourihan, but her shot was blocked well on the line by Campbell.
Beth Mead was the next to break through the City backline but her shot was saved well by Hourihan.
The hosts had the best chance of the half when Nikita Parris played the ball through to Lucy Bronze who squared it into the box but Izzy Christiansen just could not stretch enough to get a touch on the ball to put it across the line.
The visiting side started the second half in the same way they ended the first by continuing to dominate possession and their first chance of the half fell to Danielle Carter, but her header from Heather O’Reilly’s cross went straight at Hourihan.
The game needed a bit of magic and it got just that when Nobbs hit a sublime long range free-kick towards goal leaving Hourihan no chance to take the lead.
City desperately tried to grab an equaliser before the end but the Arsenal defence stood strong to make them the first side to defeat City in a league match since April 2015.
The current champions will hope to get back to winning ways when they travel to Sunderland this upcoming Wednesday.
