Manchester City Women 1-1 Reading Women – City miss the chance to go top after draw with Reading

Manchester City Women tonight missed the chance to go top of the FA Women’s Super League table after a 1-1 draw with Reading Women at the Academy Stadium.

A win for Nick Cushing’s side would have took them above leaders Arsenal Women and they looked on course to do just that when Georgia Stanway opened the scoring on 33 minutes with a ferocious rocket of a shot.

But the visitors came out roaring after the break and they had an equaliser five minutes into the second half when substitute Jade Moore rose highest to head the ball past Ellie Roebuck in the City goal.

The draw keeps City in second place with Reading also remaining in sixth.

The hosts started the game the better of the two sides with both Jill Scott and Stanway producing unsuccessful attempts at goal before the latter broke the deadlock with a rifled long-range effort into the top corner.

Reading came out for the second half looking determined and the substitute Moore made an instant impact as she drew her side level with a bullet header.

It was then time for the Reading goalkeeper, Grace Moloney, to become the hero as the Republic of Ireland international did superbly to palm the ball away from Nikita Parris after a teasing low cross into the box by Tessa Wullaert.

Wullaert then almost stole the headlines in injury time as she fired a magnificent effort towards goal only to see it crash back into play off the woodwork.

Next up for Manchester City Women is an away trip to Prenton Park to face Liverpool Women in the FA Women’s Super League on Sunday 4 November.
