Manchester City Women 2-0 Arsenal Women – City close the gap at the top after victory over league leaders Arsenal

Manchester City Women today closed the gap at the top of the FA Women’s Super League to just three points after a 2-0 win over Arsenal Women at the Academy Stadium.

The visitors came into the game with a 100% record but it was Nick Cushing’s side who took the lead in the first half when Georgia Stanway finished from close range.

Stanway then secured a brace and the game midway through the second half as the England forward superbly worked her way into the box before firing the ball past Arsenal goalkeeper, Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

This afternoon’s victory means that City are now the only unbeaten side in the top flight and that just three points now separate the hosts and Joe Montemurro’s league leaders.

The hosts were the better of the two sides for most of the game with Stanway troubling the Arsenal defence from the start before breaking the deadlock with a finish from inside the box.

Arsenal striker Beth Mead produced her side’s best chance of the first half when she forced City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck into making a save after firing a long-range effort towards goal.

The visitors looked more determined after the break and Vivianne Miedema had the opportunity to equalise but she fired her effort wide of the target.

City remained strong at the back and they then sealed the win as Stanway grabbed her second following a superb solo run.

Next up for Manchester City Women is a Continental Cup fixture as Sheffield United Women travel to the Academy Stadium on Wednesday 5 December.
